Victoria – I am a law student at the University of Victoria and a member of the 2016 Pivot Legal Welfare Food Challenge Team. I have worked as an advocate for persons navigating the provincial Income Assistance program and witnessed how BC’s shamefully low welfare rates contribute to the ongoing oppression of marginalized, vulnerable people. We have a collective responsibility to ensure that all British Columbians are supported to live with health and dignity. Raising welfare rates to a livable level would substantially improve the safety, freedom and well-being of many of BC’s residents.
