Vancouver – I work with Pivot Legal Society and am a member of the 2016 Pivot Legal Welfare Food Challenge Team. I joined the Pivot team as a researcher in 2006, and since then, I have held several positions including child welfare campaigner, coordinator of the Jane Doe Legal Network, and campaigns director. I also hold a PhD in sociology from the University of British Columbia.
In 1996, when I was 19, I spent some time on income assistance after my son was born. Those months were some of the hardest of my life. Over the intervening two decades, welfare rates have consistently declined relative to the cost of living. The situation has become untenable. I am taking part in this challenge to raise awareness of the needless suffering of people in need of assistance in this province and to add my voice to the call for change.
