Vancouver – I am a PhD student, working on issues surrounding the environment and the oil and gas industry. I am taking the Welfare Challenge as I want to have a better, and deeper, appreciation for the ways in which so many people – in Canada and across the globe – struggle to have the things I take for granted.
Living in a great city like Vancouver, finding great food isn’t hard. Finding food for 18$ … that’s something I can’t imagine, even as a single young person. Add in other challenges, and even thinking about it starts to become overwhelming. I expect this challenge to be difficult. I expect I will be frustrated, likely bored of my meals, and envious of those eating whatever they please. I expect to come away from it with a better understanding of just how lucky I am to be able to afford food without a second thought.
