Have you written to the Premier, Christy Clark, the Minister of Social Development and Social Innovation, Don McRae, the Leader of the Opposition, John Horgan, or your provincial MLA – asking the Provincial Government to raise welfare rates in BC?
You can find their contact information here: http://www.leg.bc.ca/mla/3-1-1.htm and there’s a sample letter on our Take Action page.
Now would be a great time to do it, as many people are doing this during the Welfare Food Challenge! Here is what Bif Naked wrote in her letter!
To The Honourable Don McRae, Minister of Social Development and Social Innovation,
As you probably know I am taking part in Raise The Rates’ 3rd Annual Welfare Food Challenge starting on Thursday, October 16th.
On the same day that I announced I was taking the Challenge, you were reported in the media as saying that you were looking at raising welfare rates.
I welcome this announcement.
I thought that, to better inform your decisions, you would like to join me in taking The Welfare Food Challenge. This would give you lived experience, albeit only for a week, of the reality of living on welfare in BC. The reality of eating what a person on welfare lives on would, undoubtedly, help in deciding on assistance levels.
I also thought that, after The Challenge, once we both recover, we should meet together to discuss our experiences and our ideas for the way ahead.
Thank you so much for your consideration, and I look forward to sharing The Welfare Food Challenge Experience.
With Sincerity, and In Gratitude,
