Today is day 7 of the Welfare Food Challenge. It has been an eye-opening and stomach-grumbling experience. I averaged 1650 calories per day—about 1200 fewer than what I require to maintain my body weight, given my level of physical activity. At this rate I would expect to lose at least two pounds per week. On the other hand, l consumed an average of almost 3800mg of sodium per day—well in excess of both the recommended daily intake of 1500mg and the upper limit of 2300mg for an adult under 50—and I didn’t even come close to the recommendations of Canada’s Food Guide, falling well short in both the Vegetables and Fruit and the Milk and Alternatives categories. This has confirmed my belief that the current rates are far too low and are damaging people’s health.
