About myself: I am a student in the Community Social Service Worker Program at Douglas College and a Part-Time Office Assistant.
Why you are taking the Challenge: I am taking the Challenge because I think it is an important issue. I grew up in a single parent family and have always been amazed at how hard my mom worked and sacrificed to give me the opportunities I have now. I don’t know how we would have survived if it weren’t for the social assistance and affordable housing that we were blessed with. I think it’s of great importance to give people, especially children, a fair chance at being able to better their situation. The need for basics such as decent food and shelter is not a luxury but a very necessary building block for a decent standard of living.
My worries about doing the challenge: My biggest worry is being hungry and feeling sick. I have been very blessed with a lifestyle of eating whatever I want whenever I want. For me to go from having too much sugar to practically none at all will be a challenge. It’s a bit of an eye-opener to have this challenge for only a week when there are people who deal with this on an ongoing basis.
