Participant bio – Gerry Kasten
Name: Gerry Kasten
Live: East Vancouver
About myself: I Love food! I was a cook for 10 years before I became a dietitian, and am working as a Registered Dietitian for Vancouver Coastal Health and also for the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch at Health Canada. I also teach cooking at UBC.
Why doing the Welfare Food Challenge: I’ve taken the Welfare Food Challenge because I believe that people can’t afford nutritious food when they’re living on Social Assistance, and I want to help increase awareness about that. Poverty makes people sick; and alleviating poverty would make people healthier.
My worries: I’m really worried about two things: Not having enough money for food, and being forced to live without coffee for a week.
