Participant bio – Brett Trainor
Name: Brett Trainor
About myself: I was born and raised on Vancouver Island, and grew up skiing, biking, and playing soccer. I am currently studying Global Resource Systems at UBC Vancouver, with a focus in sustainable urban development. As part of my Land, Food, and Community 350 course, my group is working with the Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House to help advocate for increased welfare rates in BC.
Why doing the Welfare Food Challenge: I hope that by participating in the Raise the Rate’s Welfare Food Challenge we can increase awareness regarding current poverty rates in BC and use social media to affect policy change regarding provincial welfare rates.
My worries: With 2 midterms and a lab this upcoming week, there won’t be much time to plan low-cost meals; so I am expecting to consume a lot of kimchi noodles. However, I realize that my situation is temporary, and I hope that this week will broaden my perspectives and cause those around me to question food equity and social justice surrounding our right to food.
