Participant bio – Andrina Perry
Name: Andrina Perry
Live: I recently moved to Victoria from Vancouver.
About myself: I am Raise the Rates’ volunteer webmaster. I am currently doing contract work in
the non-profit sector and am also a yoga instructor.
Why doing the Welfare Food Challenge: I am participating in the Welfare Food Challenge to help make the point that government should be providing adequate levels of support for people on welfare, rather than forcing them to use charity or other means of getting by. People should have the dignity to choose how they want to spend their money and what they want to eat. $610 a month is simply not enough. I hope that by participating more people will realize how inadequate welfare rates are, and that government needs to take action rather than relying on charity to fill in the gaps.
My worries: I am nervous about being hungry! I am going to buy all of my food at the beginning of the week and then divide it up into portions for each day. Even though I plan to eat mostly rice and beans, I still don’t think it will be enough food. It also means I will need to be very well organized, and make sure that I have time to prepare my food for each meal and take it with me if I’m going to be out.
